In the Book of Obadiah, Edom believed it was untouchable. Its people lived in a rock fortress high in the mountains, looking down on the world below. Then God spoke through Obadiah: “You have been deceived by your own pride because you live in a rock fortress and make your home high in the mountains. ‘Who can ever reach us way up here?’ you ask boastfully” (Obadiah 1:3, NLT).
Notice the word :deceived. Pride rarely announces itself. It disguises itself as confidence, status, or simply being better placed than others. The snobbish person is not only unkind to those below, but also deceived about where their height came from.
I learned this early. When I became Head of the Human Resources Department, I was young for the role. My Managing Director called me into his room and said, “You are very young to be a Head of Department. Remember to always be humble.” I never forgot his words. For ten years as a Human Resources Director, I spoke to the cleaners the same way I would speak to the Board of Directors. Position changes the seat we sit in, but never the worth of the person across from us.
Although I was not a very fervent Christian then, deep in my heart I knew that everything I held was from God. Looking back, it was never about how good I was, but about how good God is. I remain thankful for a mentor who helped me at the start of my leadership journey.
Then came Cappadocia. The early years were not easy. I went from leading a company to being a housewife, and it took a great deal out of me. If my identity had rested on a title, I would have crumbled. But humility had always been my cornerstone, and it held when the title was gone.
I will be honest: humility has sometimes meant being bullied by people who mistook gentleness for weakness. “But He gives us even more grace to stand against such evil desires. As the Scriptures say, ‘God opposes the proud but favors the humble’” (James 4:6, NLT).
Edom’s fortress could not save it. Titles, achievements and positions are only high places, never safe ones. Grace is the only ground that holds.
Stay low, stay grateful, and remember who lifted you up.
Kibirli
Ovadya Kitabı’nda Edom, kendisine dokunulamayacağına inanıyordu. Halkı dağlarda yüksek bir kaya kalesinde yaşıyor, aşağıdaki dünyaya tepeden bakıyordu. Sonra Tanrı, Ovadya aracılığıyla konuştu: “Kaya kovuklarında yaşayan, Evini yükseklerde kuran sen! Yüreğindeki gurur seni aldattı. İçinden, ‘Beni kim yere indirebilir?’ diyorsun” (Ovadya 1:3, Kutsal Kitap Yeni Çeviri).
Aldattı sözcüğüne dikkat edin. Gurur kendini nadiren belli eder.
Her zaman alçakgönüllü olmayı unutma.”
